Interception of embankment seepage along the Adige River (Cavanella)

Works completed:

Project overview

Cos.Idra carried out safety works on the left embankment of the Adige River at Cavanella d’Adige, aimed at intercepting seepage and improving the hydraulic stability of the embankment. The project forms part of the emergency measures launched after the 2018 extreme weather events.

Scope of works

The works involved impermeable plastic diaphragm walls in cement-bentonite mix, with depths and geometries adapted to the ground conditions. The project also included embankment works such as rock placement to reinforce slopes, berm formation and protective measures, together with preparatory works and ancillary site activities. Overall, more than 8,700 m² of plastic diaphragm walls were constructed.

Operational challenges

The site was located in an active river environment and required the integration of geotechnical, hydraulic and bank protection works. Precise execution of the impermeable diaphragm walls was essential to control seepage and reduce the risk of piping.

Results

The project improved the impermeability of the embankment and reduced seepage risk, making a direct contribution to the stability of the structure and the hydraulic safety of the area.
