SP Romea crossing using microtunnelling and jet grouting

Project overview

Cos.Idra delivered an underground crossing beneath the SP Romea, one of the busiest roads in northern Italy, as part of the wider redevelopment and safety upgrade of the South Industrial Canal. The project was carried out in a complex geotechnical setting characterised by saturated soils, groundwater and high dynamic loads from heavy traffic.

Scope of works

The crossing was constructed using microtunnelling technology, preceded by preventive ground improvement with jet grouting columns. This integrated solution improved the ground’s strength and impermeability, controlled deformation and ensured the stability of the road platform throughout the works.

Operational challenges

The main challenge was working beneath a live road without interrupting traffic or causing surface settlement. Continuous deformation monitoring, ground movement control and real-time management of the construction phases were therefore essential.

Results

The crossing was completed safely while maintaining traffic flow and controlling ground and road deformation throughout execution.
