Project overview

As part of the development of the city’s rapid transit network for the Padua area, Cos.Idra was involved in the construction of the new SIR2 tram line on the western Rubano–Padua section. This strategic infrastructure project is aimed at strengthening sustainable urban mobility and is funded under the PNRR – Next Generation EU programme.

The works were carried out along a complex urban route with limited working space, interference from existing utilities, the need for constant coordination with other contractors on site, and the added challenge of managing urban traffic.

Scope of works

Cos.Idra carried out specialist geotechnical works for ground improvement and foundation construction. The project included 130 single-fluid jet grouting columns, 700 mm in diameter, with a total length of around 130 metres, as well as structural micropiles up to 18 metres long and 275 mm in diameter. The total length of micropiles exceeded 5,000 linear metres, confirming the scale and technical significance of the works.

Operational challenges

One of the main challenges was working in a highly constrained urban setting, where utilities, traffic and parallel site activities required precise planning and very careful management of interferences. Accurate site organisation and ongoing operational coordination allowed the works to be completed efficiently, in line with the construction schedule and the constraints of the urban context.

Results

The project contributed to the delivery of a key urban mobility scheme, providing stable and safe foundations along the route and supporting the development of modern, sustainable infrastructure for the area.
