Project overview

Cos.Idra worked along the A26 motorway between Masone and Gravellona Toce to upgrade the lateral safety barriers. The works covered a long section of the route, between km 20 and km 40, and were carried out across multiple sections.

Scope of works

The project involved the installation of vertical and sub-vertical micropiles, with diameters and lengths adapted to the varying geotechnical conditions along the route. The works also included foundation beams, repairs to existing structures and the subsequent installation of new safety barriers.

Operational challenges

Works were carried out under live traffic conditions, with activities managed through partial lane closures and careful planning to minimise disruption. In some areas, the works were also carried out under asbestos risk conditions, requiring dedicated procedures, specific protective equipment and emission control systems during drilling.

Results

The project helped improve the safety of the infrastructure by delivering new foundations in a complex operating environment spread over several kilometres. Coordinated management of variable ground conditions, traffic constraints and safe working procedures — including in asbestos-risk areas — ensured continuity across the entire section.
