Project overview

As part of the revamping of an industrial plant at a steel production facility in Graz, Cos.Idra delivered deep foundation works for new structures within a live production environment, characterised by operational constraints, plant interference and the need to maintain ongoing industrial activity.

Scope of works

The project involved foundation micropiles with diameters of 220 and 250 mm, tubular reinforcement and depths of up to 14 metres. In addition to the main micropiles included in the original layout, further micropiles were installed during construction, resulting in a substantial overall volume of works. The project also included foundation pile caps connected to the micropiles and load tests to verify performance.

Operational challenges

The works were carried out inside a fully operational steelworks, in restricted spaces and with the need for constant coordination with plant operations. To meet the required programme, the site also operated on a continuous 24/7 shift basis during the most critical periods, including over Christmas.

Results

The project supported the construction of new foundations while ensuring structural reliability, operational continuity and compliance with the required timeline. Continuous shift working made it possible to adapt execution to the plant’s requirements and site conditions.
